Transitioning to Enufism

Updated: 1 day ago

Enufism espouses lower consumerism. Why? Because ever since the Industrial Revolution, when mill owners in England cottoned on to the idea that if their workers were paid more, they would consume more.

Unfortunately as the years, and centuries, have passed, this has got way out of control, to a point where the main protagenists of "spend more to be happier" are governments, seeking to be be re-elected.

Frankly, it's worked, as you'll hardly ever hear the proverbial "man in the street" debunking the idea that endless economic is the panacea to all problems.

But is it? How can we keep on growing exponentially? Who loses, and who gains? First, the losers. These include the natural world - the land, the forests, and the oceans. They are being diminished with every % point of growth.

And we humans also lose bigtime, as we are effectively forced to eat unnaturally produced animal and vegetable foods (think ultra-processed foods, and factory farming).

Let's briefly take a look at the winners. They mainly comprise large monopolistic corporations, along with their fat-cat senior management, who are paid totally exorbitant amounts of money, particularly when compared with the average wage or salary of their employees.

Forbes Magazine reported last year that CEO pay rose 56 times more than worker pay. Even worse, in 2024, CEOs were paid 281 times as much as a typical worker—in contrast to 1965, when they were paid 21 times more, a more than 10-fold increase!

This has got to stop, not from envy but from fairness. That's one transitional move which is easy to effectuate.

Next, and slightly more daunting, is to persuade and show people that the endless grind to have more stuff is pointless. It's become like a drug for zillions of people. The expression "retail therapy" has entered into the mainstream of language. Sounds funny in a way, but it's not really. It's like saying give me another drink, line of cocaine, joint, or whatever, and everything will be perfect.

We all know deep down that's not true. I'd bet that if (and when) enough people make the change to enufism, it'll become a tidal wave as others see themselves how "enufists" are happier!
